Air Horn Texas' 10-foot-tall inflatable mascot introduced in 1998.
Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid Strength Complex [2012 Robert Dedman Dr., 78712] Located in Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center.
All- Capitalize when part of a proper name: All-Big 12.
All-America, All-American Use All-America in reference to a team or honor: All-America team, or All-America selection. Use All-American in reference to an individual: All-American Ricky Williams.
All-Big 12 teams All-conference honors are awarded for all league sports. All-league honorees are identified as follows:
all-tournament, all-state Lowercase when not referring to a specific all-tournament team: He earned all-tournament honors. Do not capitalize unless it is a specific tournament, like the NCAA East Region All-Tournament Team. It's also all-state, unless it is the Phillips 66 All-State Team.
Alpha Phi Omega flag The Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity, is responsible for the pregame display of the world's largest Texas flag. Made of 777 square yards of fabric and weighing 900 pounds, the flag is displayed at home football games, select away football games, the Texas-Texas A&M Hex Rally and other special university occasions.

Bevo Longhorns mascot. Refers to the steer, not the person in the mascot costume. Also not written in all caps.
Big Bertha The largest bass drum in the world, Big Bertha was introduced by the Longhorn Band in 1955. Measures 54 inches across and weighs 500 pounds.
Big 12 member schools Preferred abbreviations for statistics and second references
*Do not use "Lady" or "Ladies" in reference to women's teams at any school, except for Baylor (WBB), Oklahoma State (all sports) and Texas Tech (WBB) (school preferences).
Big 12 player awards Capitalize names of major awards.
Correct: Big 12 Player of the Year

Big 12 Championship, Big 12 Championships Not tournament or tournaments. As of July 2015, 'championship' is no longer plural for any postseason event, even if both a men's and women's championship are being contested.

Big 12 Conference logo Updated logo introduced on July 1, 2014; last updated 15 Aug. 2018. Logo files may be downloaded at this link on UT Box. For the men's and women's basketball and baseball championships, the postseason Phillips 66 logo should be used. For all other sport championships, the logo produced by the conference office should be used. Member schools may NOT produce championship logos.
Big 12 Conference online
box office Lowercase in general use, but Texas Box Office when referring to that specific entity.
"The Bubble" Informal name for the Indoor Practice Facilty located at Frank Denius Fields.
burnt orange and white Lowercase the official school colors. (The Pantone matching system number for color reproduction of burnt orange is PMS 159. The hexadecimal code used by both UT and Texas Athletics is #BF5700.)
byline All bylines should be "First name Last name, Texas Media Relations." Do not include job titles or "compiled by."

capitalization Avoid using all caps for emphasis. In general, avoid unnecessary capitalization.

Central time Use "Central" only with a clock reading, not "Central Daylight Time" or "Central Standard Time."

The Colony, Texas "The" is part of the city name.
dates Always use Arabic figures, without st, nd, rd or th. (Also see "months" entry.)

email address Email addresses use this format: username@location.subdomain.domain. For instance, the address jane.doe@athletics.utexas.edu specifies a user named "jane.doe" at the location (sometimes a physical computer, but not always) "athletics" in the "utexas" subdomain of the "edu" domain. Use plain text for email addresses in text. See also Internet address.

Hex Rally Traditionally, a night-time pep rally held before the annual Texas-Texas A&M football game. Tradition holds that if Longhorns gather and light red candles, a curse will be placed on the Aggies and a Texas victory guaranteed.
Tom and Cinda Hicks North Gate Historic north gate and seal located at north end of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium between gates 14 and 16.
home page Two words; lowercase. Use to refer to a webpage that serves as the directory or entry point to a website. Don't use to refer to an entire website.
Hook 'Em Longhorns costumed mascot. Refers to the person in the suit, not the steer.
Hook 'em, Horns Universally recognized hand signal created by head cheerleader Harley Clark in 1955 that approximates the horns of a Longhorn. Voted best hand signal in the country by Sports Illustrated in 1997. As an expression, punctuate as Hook 'em, Horns!
Horns Not 'Horns.
Indoor Practice Facility [2501 Red River St., 78705] Formal name for "The Bubble"; located at Frank Denius Fields.
internet Lowercase per AP Stylebook as of 1 June 2016. Lowercase ‘internet' in all instances; it has become a generic term. When used as a noun, always preceded by 'the'. The internet is a decentralized, worldwide network of computers and other devices that can communicate with each other. Don't use internet and World Wide Web or web interchangeably; the web is just one part of the internet. See also World Wide Web.
internet address A decentralized, worldwide network of computers that can communicate with each other. The World Wide Web, like email, is a subset of the internet. They are not synonymous and should not be used interchangeably in stories. An internet address can refer to a computer on the internet, a file available over the internet (for example, a web page), or an account on a computer connected to the internet (for example, an email address). See also email address; URL; web address.
italics Avoid in website postings because of poor legibility on computer displays.

lady, ladies Do not refer to women's sports teams as Lady or Ladies, unless that is the team's official name such as Baylor Lady Bears and Texas Tech Lady Raiders (women's basketball only).

log in (v.), login, logon, logoff (n.) Do not use when directing someone to visit a website or webpage, unless that site or page actually requires a login and password.

Longhorn Network [3300 N. IH-35, 5th Floor, 78705] Launched in August 2011. LHN is acceptable on second reference. ESPN has a 20-year agreement to own and operate a year-round, 24-hour network dedicated to Texas athletics in partnership with UT and IMG College. Longhorn Network offers a variety of content, highlighted by more than 200 exclusive events annually from 20 sports, original series and studio shows, historical programming and academic and cultural happenings. Additionally, the LonghornNetwork.com broadband companion to the TV network offers extensive content, particularly live games not carried on the linear TV network due to scheduling conflicts.
Longhorn Sports Center Not SportsCenter (per Terri Kelley at Longhorn Sports Network, 18 June 2007). As of the launch of Longhorn Network, this show is no longer in production.
Longhorn Sportsline Not SportsLine (per Terri Kelley at Longhorn Sports Network, 18 June 2007). As of the 2012-13 season, this radio show has been renamed Longhorn Weekly.
Longhorns The official team nickname. Do not remove the "s" when using the name as a modifier. If this seems awkward, use "Texas" with the sport name instead. (See "sport names.") Some exceptions are Longhorn Links, Longhorn City Limits. Exceptions must be approved by the executive senior associate AD for external affairs.
Incorrect: Longhorn pitcher D. J. Jones won the award.
Correct: Longhorns pitcher D. J. Jones won the award.

Richard Mithoff Field House [2011 Robert Dedman Dr., 78712] Located in Myers Stadium; used by the Soccer and Track and Field/Cross Country programs.
W. A. "Tex" Moncrief Jr.-Dana X. Bible Academic Center (north end, 5th floor)
W. A. "Tex" Moncrief Jr.-V. F. "Doc" Neuhaus Athletic Center [2012 Robert Dedman Dr., 78712] Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center is acceptable on first reference; MNAC is acceptable on second reference. (Note: Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center was formerly known as the V. F. "Doc" Neuhaus-Darrell K Royal Athletic Center.) Other areas within MNAC include:
months Capitalize the names of months in all uses. When a month is used with a specific date, abbreviate only Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. Spell out when using alone, or with a year alone. When a phrase lists only a month and a year, do not separate the year with commas. When a phrase refers to a month, day and year, set off the year with commas.

National Champion, National Championship Capitalize even when not part of an event's official title.
National Letter of Intent, National Letters of Intent Always treated as a proper noun and capitalized in copy.
NCAA Acceptable on first reference for National Collegiate Athletic Association. The abbreviation is pronounced "en-see-ay-ay," so it is preceded by an, not a.
NCAA Championship Not NCAA National Championship.
off-season
online (adj., pred. adj., adv.) One word. Use to describe items to which the user gains access over a network (you can search an online database). Avoid when referring to the state of being connected to a network (if you're online); use another appropriate term, such as connected to the network or logged in.
Penick-Allison Tennis Center [formerly located at 1701 Trinity, 78701] PATC was demolished after the 2013-14 season for construction of the Dell Medical School. The last match played at the facility was an NCAA Second Round match between Texas Men's Tennis and Mississippi State on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Texas won, 4-1.
phone numbers When giving phone numbers, use a hyphen between the area code and number, but do not include a leading "1."

pompom, pom-pom Pompoms are decorative clusters of streamers waved by cheerleaders. Pom-poms are rapid-firing automatic weapons.
postgame, postseason One word, no hyphen.
pregame, preseason One word, no hyphen.
pronunciation Whenever the pronunciation of an acronym or name is not self-evident, it's a good idea to give a pronunciation key. Use all caps for the stressed syllable; use a hyphen between syllables. Enclose the phonetic spelling in quotation marks: Seago (pronounced "SEE-go")

Smokey the Cannon Residing in north end zone area at home football games, Smokey's thunderous roar is heard when the cannon fires blank shotgun shells after each Texas score and at the final gun after a Texas victory. The cannon is operated by the Texas Cowboys, a men's campus service organization.

softball facility

spelling conflicts Governed by the latest edition of Webster's New World College Dictionary (primary source).

sponsorships Names of sponsors should not be italicized unless the sponsor is also a publication. Example: Golf Digest Invitational; but Kia Klassic, not Kia Klassic. (Note: Italics should be avoided in website postings because of potential legibility issues on computer displays.)
sport management Not sports management.
sport names Capitalize the name of a sport when preceded by Texas: Texas Rowing is the newest varsity sport. But never Longhorn Rowing or Longhorns Rowing.
sports dietitian Not dietician.
The H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports Located on the 5th floor of the Red McCombs Red Zone. Stark Center is acceptable on second reference. The center's mission is dedicated to preserving the history of physical culture and sports and educating the public about its cultural and scientific significance.
State Farm Lone Star Showdown [Sponsorship was discontinued after the 2011-12 season with Texas A&M's move to the SEC.] The official moniker for all varsity men's and women's athletics competition between UT and Texas A&M, titled and supported financially through a major sponsorship from State Farm Insurance Companies. The rivalry series is tracked by a point system during the 25 scheduled matchups between the schools, with a total of 19 points available.
state names Spell out state names in copy. Use AP's acceptable abbreviations in tabular data. Never use the two-letter postal abbreviations in copy or tabular data. [Note: As of June 1, 2014, AP style changed from abbreviating state names in copy to spelling out state names in both domestic and international copy.]
state-of-the-art Use "latest" instead.
student-athlete Note the hyphen.

URL Abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator, a way of specifying internet addresses. The abbreviation is pronounced "you-are-el," so it is preceded by a, not an. A URL can specify an address for a webpage. To describe general concepts in text, consider using address instead of URL, because it's easier to understand. See internet address; web address.
UT Athletics Please use Texas Athletics, not UT Athletics.
utilize Use "use" instead. "Utilize" is the awkward verb form of the obsolete adjective "utile."
volleyball facility

web Short form of World Wide Web, it is a service, or set of standards, that enables the publishing of multimedia documents on the internet. The web is not the same as the internet, but is a subset; other applications, such as email, exist on the internet. Also, website, webcam, webcast, webfeed, webmaster, webpage. But web address, web browser. See also World Wide Web.
web address You use a web address (usually expressed as a URL) to connect to a webpage. webpage A self-contained document that can be viewed by using a web address. A single website can contain many webpages. You connect to (or go to) a page; you are then at that page. Text, graphics, and links, however, are on the page. Don't use website and webpage interchangeably. See also home page; web address; website.
website A location on the World Wide Web that maintains one or more pages at a specific address. You can browse, visit or go to a website, but don't use such phrases as "point your browser at the website" and "surf the website." Also, webcam, webcast, webfeed, webmaster, webpage.
